Owae Marae Wharekai

The wharekai of Owae Marae, Ko Tamawahine, has long been a place of gathering and hospitality for Te Atiawa. With the building reaching the end of its life, the decision was made to carefully demolish it and construct a new wharekai on the same site and footprint. This redevelopment carries deep cultural and spiritual importance for mana whenua and the wider Taranaki community.

Clelands’ Role
Clelands were engaged to manage the demolition and construction, ensuring the project was carried out with the utmost respect for cultural protocols and community values. Our role extended beyond the technical build, supporting the aspirations of Te Atiawa to create a wharekai that will serve generations to come.

The Trust chose to partner with Clelands Construction because of shared values and their dedication and awareness of the phases of our redevelopment at the marae. These projects are intergenerational and will serve our community for decades to come. Clelands Construction including their Senior Management, employees and subcontractors were aware of this significance as shown in their conduct and workmanship.
