FDMC Gymnasium & Assembly Hall

Clelands delivered a purpose built gymnasium and assembly hall for Francis Douglas Memorial College in New Plymouth. The project provides a large scale, multi use facility designed to support sport, assemblies, and community events, with a strong focus on durability, acoustic performance, and flexibility. The two level building includes a full sports court, retractable tiered seating, a weights room, and supporting amenities, creating a central hub that enhances student life and strengthens connection across the college community.

From the outset, Clelands Construction proved to be an outstanding partner. Building on their strong reputation for delivering significant projects in Taranaki, they worked closely alongside our design team to ensure that the vision for this facility was realised to an exceptional standard.

Clelands were engaged as head contractor to deliver a technically complex gymnasium and assembly hall within a live school environment, coordinating all structural, architectural, and services elements from early construction through to completion. Careful staging, strong health and safety management, and ongoing stakeholder communication were critical to maintaining programme certainty while minimising disruption to the wider campus.

The build combined precast concrete, structural steel, and engineered timber systems to achieve the large span court space, alongside a high performance insulated roof system designed for acoustic and thermal control. Externally, profiled metal cladding, aluminium panel systems, brick veneer, and high performance glazing were carefully detailed to provide a durable, low maintenance envelope suited to Taranaki conditions.

Internally, Clelands delivered specialist sports flooring, suspended acoustic ceiling systems, integrated court infrastructure, and robust interior finishes designed to withstand high levels of daily use. The completed facility provides a high quality, future focused environment that supports sport, assemblies, and community connection, reflecting Clelands’ commitment to craftsmanship, coordination, and long term value.

Clelands demonstrated strong attention to detail across all aspects of the build. This was reflected not only in the quality of the finished facility, but also in the care taken throughout the construction process.
