Pukerungiora Pā
Located within the historic Pukerangiora Pā reserve at Huirangi, Taranaki, this project enhances visitor access while respecting the site's deep cultural, archaeological and historical significance. Clelands delivered a range of infrastructure and landscape improvements designed to support manuhiri, educational groups and the wider community while preserving the integrity of this important wāhi tapu.
The project included construction of a new carpark, wharepaku, boardwalks, pathways, a Whare Kōrero entrance structure, amphitheatre seating, interpretive elements, landscaping works and associated earthworks. All works were undertaken within a sensitive archaeological environment requiring ongoing cultural oversight and monitoring throughout construction.
Works were subject to resource consent conditions and archaeological authority requirements, with cultural monitoring and archaeological oversight integrated throughout the project. Construction also needed to accommodate public access within the reserve while maintaining safe separation from active work areas.
New pathways, boardwalks, interpretive features and visitor amenities enable people to engage more deeply with the site's history while protecting and preserving its cultural and archaeological values for future generations. The project reflects a collaborative approach between construction, cultural, environmental and stakeholder requirements, delivering a meaningful outcome for both the local community and visitors to the region.
