PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Puke Ariki is Taranaki’s heritage and information centre and set a standard on the world stage. It was the world’s first purpose-built, fully-integrated museum, library and visitor information centre. The complex won Creative New Zealand’s prestigious Creative Places Award for 2003 as well as several NZ Architecture and Master Builders awards. Puke Ariki combines the hi-tech with the historical, and intentionally challenges, informs and entertains. At the time it was the largest cultural project ever undertaken in Taranaki (now arguably superseded by the Len Lye Centre). As the site used to be a pa and then became the administration area for the city it is significant to both Maori and Pakeha. The site for Puke Ariki heightens its beauty and significance. The two winged building is situated in New Plymouth’s CBD, next to the Coastal Walkway and the Tasman Sea.
