PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The old Atkinson Building on Devon Street West underwent an extensive transformation, starting with significant asbestos removal, structural strengthening, roof re-pitching and replacement, a new exterior façade, and a complete internal refurbishment. In June 2023, the building was unveiled as Ngāmotu House.

The exterior façade resembles a korowai (a traditional Māori cloak of high status), wrapping the building with patterns that tell integrated stories. Boon Architects collaborated with Te Ātiawa and Ngāti Te Whiti to embed a Te Ātiawa cultural narrative throughout the design. The full refurbishment was completed in early 2024.
